Where have we taught this?

  • St. Martin De Porres Family Center
  • Fatima Community Center
  • St. Vincent Diabetic Teaching Class

Andi and her students/volunteers will go around to community centers to teach topics requested by community members. Depending on what is requested, they will create a teaching tool, and hand out aids depending on what is taught. For example, with this one we handed out a banana and handmade blankets at the Diabetic Teaching class. The blankets get donated by a very talented friend of Andi's, and are made with lots of care and love.

Why is this important to teach?

The Holidays, either in the winter or summer, are a time to gather, see family, and EAT FOOD. Holidays have some of the most delicious dishes regardless of what holiday is being celebrated. A lot of cultures have sweets, special desserts, and specific dishes that they make. Importantly, some cultures go through periods of fasting, and can only eat specific things at specific times. The most important thing to teach to the Cleveland community is that no matter what you are celebrating, you must eat everything in moderation. Having only one sweet or a small slice of dessert can help you celebrate and stay healthy. There are also ways to eat the same traditional foods, but maybe air frying or baking it instead of frying it in oil. Holidays are a time of joy, but for some people with underlying conditions the dinner table can be a minefield. It is crucial to know what you can eat and what you should avoid.
