Where have we taught this?

  • Fatima Family Center
  • St. Vincent Diabetic Teaching class

Andi and her students/volunteers will go around to community centers to teach topics requested by community members. Depending on what is requested, they will create a teaching tool, and hand out aids depending on what is taught. For example, for this teaching Andi and her students brought dash seasoning packets and magnifying glasses to look at the nutrition labels.

Why is it important to teach about healthy eating on a budget?

The human body runs on food, and what you eat and use for fuel can have a drastic effect on your health. It is important to eat a healthy balanced diet, with protein, vegetables, fruit, dairy, and healthy fats. Unfortunately, getting fresh produce, meats, and other options can be extremely expensive, and maybe even impossible if you do not live by a grocery store. This forces a large part of the community to rely on heavily processed, saturated, foods that are high in sodium and other chemicals to keep it edible for long periods of time. It is cheap and easy to get junk food, but difficult and expensive to get your hands on good quality food. This teaching can help guide people into getting the healthiest options of the ones that are provided at places such as the Dollar store, Family dollar, etc.
