Winter Safety Tips

Taught at multiple senior community centers, call us at 216-391-7557 or scroll down!

Where have we taught this?

  • St. Martin De Porres Family Center
Andi and her students/volunteers will go around to community centers to teach topics requested by community members. Depending on what is requested, they will create a teaching tool, and hand out aids depending on what is taught. For example, for this teaching they handed out flashlights to help people see in the dark if the power goes out or they need to walk to the bathroom at night.

Why is it important to learn about winter safety?

Winter is one of the most dangerous seasons for senior adults due to its harsh weather conditions, icy roads, and increases vulnerability to getting sick. It is important to know how to stay safe, and warm. Simple things such as checking the weather before you leave the house and making sure you are dressed right for the weather could make a huge difference. Layering correctly will help keep someone warm, even if they do not have a fancy winter coat! If the power goes out it is important to know who to call, where to go in the meantime, and what to do if it turns into an emergency. It is also important to make sure you have food that won't spoil quick in case you get trapped inside, and it is crucial to keep in touch with friends and family so people know what is happening with you, and to help fight off feelings of isolation!
